Wessex Water Executives Received Extra Pay Despite Bonus Restrictions

Senior executives at Wessex Water received £50,000 in additional, previously undisclosed payments during a year when government rules barred the company from awarding bonuses. Chief executive Ruth Jefferson and finance director Andy Pymer were paid £24,000 and £27,000 respectively by Wessex Water Ltd, the group’s parent company, according to its owner, Malaysia-based YTL.
“The Daily Baku” reports that, the payments were revealed only after repeated questions about executive pay transparency. While YTL insists the sums were not bonuses, they came on top of substantial salaries from the regulated water business, which serves nearly three million customers in south-west England.
Wessex Water was among six utilities banned from paying bonuses after a criminal conviction linked to sewage pollution. Although the ban formally applied to payments from the regulated company, critics argue the additional remuneration undermines the spirit of the rules.
Politicians and regulators have increasingly questioned opaque pay structures across the water sector. Similar cases at other utilities have fuelled public anger, particularly amid concerns over pollution, infrastructure failures and rising bills.
Opposition MPs say the case highlights the need for stricter oversight and clearer disclosure, warning that public trust in water companies continues to erode.
