US deploys small military contingent to Nigeria

The United States has deployed a small military contingent to Nigeria.
According to The Daily Baku, this was reported by Reuters, citing the head of the US Africa Command, General Dagvin Anderson.
The agency noted that this marks the first confirmed presence of US military forces in Nigeria following an agreement between the two countries to strengthen efforts against the threat of terrorism in West Africa.
“This has led to stronger cooperation between our countries, including the deployment of a small American team that provides unique capabilities from the United States,” Anderson said, without disclosing the size or scope of the mission.
It is noted that since December 2025, the two countries have carried out several joint strikes against extremist targets on Nigerian territory, helping to prevent planned terrorist attacks in four states of the African country: Sokoto, Zamfara, Niger and Katsina.
Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said that Nigeria and the United States are strategically active in intelligence sharing and other forms of cooperation. He added that the cooperation focuses on combating Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa.
