Ursula von der Leyen: €2.5 billion investment planned for Armenia under Global Gateway

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has announced that the European Union is ready to invest in Armenia’s energy sector, expand energy connectivity via the Black Sea, and support key infrastructure projects in the country.
Speaking at the opening of the Armenia–EU summit in Yerevan, she stated that €2.5 billion in investment has already been earmarked for Armenia under the Global Gateway initiative.
According to von der Leyen, the EU is also prepared to assist in building the necessary physical infrastructure to facilitate the transportation of goods through Armenia to Europe.
“We are ready to invest in local energy development and energy connections through the Black Sea. We are also ready to connect your rapidly growing digital sector to the European digital market,” she said.
She also addressed the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, noting the broader regional context. “If we look at the region from Ukraine to Iran, it has been shaken by wars. But here in the South Caucasus, a different story is unfolding. We want to support you in showing that peace brings prosperity,” von der Leyen emphasized.
