UN to create global alliance for South-South cooperation

Civil society plays a key role in developing cooperation among countries of the Global South.
Dima Al-Khatib, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), said this in a video address to participants of the General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform in Baku.
According to her, non-governmental organizations bring global knowledge, trusted partnerships and practical innovations, while also helping turn decisions into real outcomes for local communities.
Al-Khatib stressed that the participation of civil society strengthens the inclusiveness and scalability of joint initiatives, particularly in tackling climate change, reducing inequality and enhancing urban resilience.
She also noted that within the framework of its 2026–2029 strategic programme, UNOSSC is creating a global alliance for South-South and triangular cooperation.
“The alliance will strengthen the coherence, scale and effectiveness of cooperation. It is a multilateral platform that brings similar initiatives together within a single global ecosystem of partners, solutions and financing,” she said.
According to the UNOSSC chief, the new platform will help scale up already tested solutions, strengthen interaction mechanisms between demand and supply, and support coordination of efforts at the global, regional and national levels.
