U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized Pope Leo XIV.
The American leader made the remarks on the Truth Social platform.
According to Trump, the Pope is “weak on crime and terrible in foreign policy.” He also compared what he described as Leo XIV’s comments about fear of the Trump administration to the atmosphere of panic in the Vatican during the COVID-19 period.
“He talks about fear of the Trump administration but does not talk about the fear experienced by the Catholic Church and all other Christian organizations when priests and clergy were arrested for holding services, even if they were socially distanced,” Trump wrote.
The U.S. president also said he “prefers the Pope’s brother, Louis,” claiming that he “fully supports MAGA (Make America Great Again).”
In addition, Trump said he does not want to see a Pope leading the Roman Catholic Church who, in his view, considers it acceptable for Iran to possess nuclear weapons.
“I do not want a Pope who thinks a possible U.S. attack on Venezuela is terrible, a country that sends massive amounts of drugs to the United States and, even worse, empties its prisons by sending murderers, drug dealers, and criminals into our country,” he stressed.
Trump also claimed that Leo XIV’s name had not appeared on any shortlist of candidates and that, in his opinion, his election was solely due to the fact that he is American.
“If I were not in the White House, Leo would not be in the Vatican,” Trump added.
