Tensions Rise Again Between Church and Government in Armenia: What Awaits Catholicos Garegin II?

In Armenia, the tension between the government and the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Catholicos Garegin II, has already turned into an open confrontation. The Armenian government’s attitude toward Garegin is quite harsh and decisive. The authorities view him not merely as a religious leader, but as a figure interfering in political processes, and for this reason they do not accept his position.
The discovery of weapons and ammunition within church premises in fact demonstrates that this stance is not unfounded.
The current situation shows that there is no serious resistance within the government to removing Garegin II from office. On the contrary, Pashinyan’s team wants to weaken the political influence of the church and resolve this issue before the elections, and an open and tough line has been chosen against Garegin.
Within the church itself, the situation is also not in Garegin’s favor. The presence of clergymen who do not support him and even want him to step down weakens the Catholicos’s position. This further strengthens the government’s hand and clearly shows that the state is the dominant side in this confrontation.
Garegin’s main hope lies in the parliamentary elections. He believes that after the elections the political landscape may change, allowing him to preserve his position. However, the course of events indicates that the government does not intend to let this confrontation drag on until June. Most likely, the issue will be resolved before the elections.
The opposition is also trying to take advantage of the situation and sends Garegin the message that “the people are with you.” It is clear that this support serves only political interests. If Garegin fails to meet the opposition’s expectations, this attitude could change immediately.
The Armenian government’s stance toward Garegin II is openly tough and shows no inclination toward compromise. Under the current conditions, the removal of the Catholicos from office before the elections appears to be a realistic possibility. This process will also determine the future format of relations between the church and the state in Armenia. After Garegin’s departure, carrying out reforms within the church may become easier.
