Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has cancelled at least 700 flights after heavy snow and strong winds disrupted operations, making it one of the worst weather-related shutdowns in recent years. Airport authorities said the number of cancellations could increase as freezing conditions persist across northern Europe.
“The Daily Baku” reports that, more than 1,000 passengers were forced to spend the night inside the terminal. Schiphol staff set up camp beds and provided food and basic assistance as travellers waited for updates on delayed or cancelled flights. Runway safety concerns and limited ground handling capacity were cited as the main reasons for the disruption.
The severe weather has affected transport across several European countries. In France, snowfall and icy roads led to dozens of flight cancellations in Paris and caused public bus services to be suspended in the capital and nearby suburbs. Authorities also reported multiple fatal road accidents linked to the conditions.
Meteorological agencies described the cold snap as unusually intense for this time of year, with large parts of France placed on alert for snow and black ice. Officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and work remotely where possible as winter conditions continue to disrupt daily life.
