Sharon Garin: The Philippines have requested permission from the United States to purchase Russian oil

Philippines Energy Minister Sharon Garin stated that Manila has appealed to Washington with a request to extend permission to purchase Russian oil and petroleum products.
Garin made this statement during a briefing.
“We are waiting for their response, but we are very optimistic that we will be able to get another chance,” the minister said, adding that the previous authorization expired on April 11, 2026.
According to her, the government hopes to secure an extension but is simultaneously preparing alternative supply options in case of refusal.
Garin noted that the Philippines aims to diversify its energy sources, and options are not limited to Russia. According to her, the government is considering suppliers from South America, including Colombia and Argentina, as well as Canada and even the United States.
“We wanted to open a window of opportunity with Russia because we want more options. We need diversification,” she said.
