The United States and the United Nations have signed an agreement that changes the approach to funding the Washington organization's humanitarian programs, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on his X account, The Daily Baku reports.
According to him, the United States will not fund wasteful, anti-American or ineffective programs at the expense of taxpayers.
"Today, the State Department and the UN signed an agreement that will fundamentally reform how the United States designs, finances and oversees the organization's humanitarian work. In this way, more lives can be saved with less money from American taxpayers," the post reads.
The US Secretary of State said that the new model will allow the UN to better share the burden of humanitarian work with other developed countries.
"This requires the UN to reduce excessive costs, eliminate duplication, and introduce new mechanisms for efficiency, accountability and oversight," Rubio added.
Earlier, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher said that the US government has allocated a record $2 billion to humanitarian funds managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. According to the Associated Press, this amount is about nine times less than the maximum contribution Washington has made to humanitarian assistance programs within the organization in previous years.
