MP: Azerbaijan has continued to support Ukraine during difficult times

As a state that has fully restored its sovereignty, Azerbaijan remains committed to a policy based on equality and mutual trust with all friendly and partner countries that respect its independence and territorial integrity.
This was stated by Member of Parliament Mazahir Afandiyev in a comment to “The Daily Baku.”
“Ukraine is among such friendly states and has consistently supported Azerbaijan’s just position on the political stage by recognizing our country’s territorial integrity. Diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Ukraine were established on January 31, 1992, and both states recognized each other’s independence within a short period. The Embassy of Ukraine in Azerbaijan began operating on May 5, 1996, while the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Ukraine started its activities on March 17, 1997. Although there were contacts between the heads of state on various platforms at that time, the first official visit of National Leader Heydar Aliyev to Ukraine took place on March 24–25, 1997,” he said.
Mazahir Afandiyev emphasized that today Azerbaijan and Ukraine are not only friends but also strategic partners:
“Documents on strategic partnership signed in Kyiv in 2008 and in Baku in 2011 gave a significant boost to the development of relations. The sincere relations formed between the heads of state, high-level dialogue, and mutual understanding play an important role in strengthening these ties. The visit of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Azerbaijan on April 25, 2026, once again confirmed that relations between the two countries have entered a new stage. The meetings held within the framework of this visit create conditions for further rapprochement, strengthening friendship between our peoples, and forming new opportunities for cooperation in the changing global political environment. Both bilateral and expanded-format meetings held during the visit demonstrate the high level of relations.”
Mazahir Afandiyev noted that Azerbaijan has continued to support Ukraine during difficult times:
“For more than four years, humanitarian aid has been provided to the people of Ukraine living under war conditions. In particular, support has been extended in the energy sector during the winter months. Projects aimed at bringing children affected by the war in Ukraine to Azerbaijan for rehabilitation are also successfully ongoing.”
He also stressed the special importance of interparliamentary cooperation:
“The Azerbaijan–Ukraine interparliamentary working group has been operating in the Milli Majlis since 1995. In 2020, a similar group of deputies was established in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. These platforms serve to further strengthen relations.”
In conclusion, Mazahir Afandiyev noted that the current dynamics create positive prospects for the future. The friendship based on mutual trust and the intensive political dialogue we observe today open broad opportunities for the consistent implementation of major projects aimed at the welfare of the peoples of both countries.
