Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz stated today that Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was killed in an Israeli attack carried out late last night. Along with Larijani, Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij paramilitary police forces, was also killed.
There has been no reaction from Iran regarding this news so far. Larijani, who was a mathematician and computer science engineer by profession, was also a philosopher. He had long been part of Iran’s leadership and was known as a hardliner.
Following the killing of Ali Khamenei, it was reported that Larijani had effectively assumed the country’s political leadership.
After Larijani’s death, President Pezeshkian emerges as the main political figure in the country. However, real power in the country continues to remain with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
