According to foreign media reports, both vessels posed a threat to safe navigation by operating without the necessary authorization. After being detained, they were escorted to the Iranian coast.
The incident occurred amid reports from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) of two cases of vessels being fired upon in the Strait of Hormuz area by forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
It should be recalled that on February 28, the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran, carrying out strikes on several cities. The operation led to an escalation in the Middle East, drawing in all countries of the Persian Gulf and resulting in the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran, the United States, and their allies reached a ceasefire agreement on the night of April 8, 2026, which expired on the night of April 22. On April 22, Donald Trump stated that he was extending the ceasefire regime.
The parties attempted to hold negotiations in Pakistan to resolve the conflict, but the first round, held on April 11–12, did not yield any results. A new round of talks was expected on April 22, but Iran refused to send its delegation to Pakistan due to disagreements with the United States over the functioning of the Strait of Hormuz.
As a form of pressure on Tehran, the United States announced a blockade of Iranian ports and transit through the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iran declared a blockade of Hormuz for vessels heading to Persian Gulf countries. The rapidly evolving situation in the region has triggered a global energy crisis.
