Iran accused of carrying out a “retaliation campaign” after arresting doctors who treated protesters

Iran is facing criticism following the arrest of doctors who provided medical assistance to people injured during anti government protests. Human rights organizations say medical workers who helped treat large numbers of wounded protesters are now being detained and prosecuted.
According to rights groups, doctors treated individuals who suffered serious injuries during security crackdowns, including gunshot and stab wounds. In some cases, medical workers reportedly set up temporary treatment facilities to provide urgent care outside official hospitals.
The Norway based human rights organization Hengaw reported that a 52 year old Iranian surgeon from the city of Qazvin, Alireza Golchini, has been charged with moharebeh, a legal term in Iran that refers to waging war against God. Under Iranian law, the charge can carry the death penalty.
Iranian authorities have not publicly provided detailed information on the case. Human rights organizations argue that the arrests are linked to doctors’ involvement in treating injured protesters.
The United States Department of State has called for Golchini’s release, expressing concern over the treatment of medical professionals. Iranian officials have not publicly responded to the statement.
Observers say the case has intensified international scrutiny of Iran’s handling of protests and the conditions under which medical workers operate during periods of unrest.
