Fidan: Free and unhindered passage through Hormuz must be ensured

Türkiye believes that the passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz should be unhindered.
This was stated by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in a program aired by Anadolu Agency.
Responding to a question about the Strait of Hormuz, the minister stressed that ships should pass through it without payment:
“The Strait of Hormuz shows that this conflict (between the United States and Iran — ed.) has not only regional but also global consequences. Everyone must do their utmost to resolve the Hormuz issue. Türkiye, for its part, is doing everything possible to find a solution.”
Fidan also said that both the United States and Iran are showing sincerity regarding the ceasefire.
The foreign minister added that regular contact is maintained with the parties throughout the day. He emphasized that Ankara is actively engaging with both sides of the conflict to find a mutually acceptable solution.
It is recalled that on February 28, the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran, carrying out airstrikes on a number of cities. On the same day, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the strikes. In response, Iran launched missile attacks on Israeli territory and targeted U.S. military bases in Gulf countries. In addition, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz to vessels from unfriendly countries.
Iran, the United States, and their allies reached a two-week ceasefire agreement during the night of April 8, 2026. Talks between Iran and the United States, mediated by Pakistan, were held in Islamabad on April 11–12, but ended without result. In particular, the sides failed to reach agreement on the principles of vessel passage through Hormuz.
Iranian authorities have stated that they intend to introduce special permits for vessels passing through the strait and to charge fees for this.
