Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Cash Patel announced the closure of the agency's headquarters and the agency's move to another building, the announcement was posted on the agency director's social media page, The Daily Baku reports.
"After more than 20 years of failed attempts, we have finalized a plan to permanently close the FBI's headquarters in the Hoover Building and relocate our employees to a secure, modern facility. When we began work, taxpayers were facing the prospect of spending nearly $5 billion on a new headquarters that would not open until 2035. We have canceled that plan," Patel said.
He added that the headquarters will move to the Ronald Reagan Building, located a few blocks away.
"The Hoover Building will be permanently closed," the FBI director stated. He noted that most of the headquarters staff will move to the new building after the renovation is completed, and some agents will be transferred to field assignments as part of a policy of redeploying resources.
The FBI headquarters is located in the J. Edgar Hoover Building, built in 1975 and named after the former director of the intelligence agency, who led it from 1924 to 1972. As The Wall Street Journal reported in 2023, the complex is "crumbling and no longer meets the needs of an organization that has grown over the past 50 years." A complete renovation of the building, according to media estimates, would cost $1.7 billion and take 14 years.
