Ex-premier of Georgia is detained and transferred to a penitentiary institution

Former Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, who pleaded guilty to money laundering charges, has been detained and is being transferred to a penitentiary facility.
As reported by The Daily Baku, citing Georgian media, his lawyer, Mikheil Shakulashvili, announced.
"Garibashvili has already been detained. He is currently en route and is being transferred to prison," the lawyer stated, adding that he does not yet know where he will serve his sentence.
Earlier today, the Georgian Prosecutor General's Office announced that a plea bargain had been reached with Garibashvili, under which he admitted his guilt. The court sentenced him to five years in prison. In addition, the former prime minister was fined 1 million lari (approximately $370,000) and ordered to hand over to the state the funds seized during the search of his home—approximately $6.5 million.
Garibashvili served as Prime Minister of Georgia from 2013–2015 and 2021–2024. In October 2024, the Prosecutor General's Office charged him with money laundering. According to investigators, he secretly engaged in entrepreneurial activity from 2019–2021, which is prohibited for officials.
