European leaders welcome Magyar’s election victory in Hungary

European leaders have congratulated Hungary’s new prime minister, Péter Magyar, on his victory in the parliamentary elections.
Relevant statements were published on social media.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico congratulated Péter Magyar, emphasizing readiness for active cooperation with the new head of the Hungarian government.
“I have great respect for the decision made by the citizens of Hungary in yesterday’s parliamentary elections. I am ready for close cooperation with the new prime minister and congratulate him on the election results,” he wrote on X.
Fico noted that Bratislava intends to develop friendly and mutually beneficial relations with Budapest, as well as work to improve the situation of national minorities in both countries. He also stressed the importance of reviving cooperation within the Visegrád Group and coordinating efforts in the field of energy security.
According to the Slovak prime minister, the Druzhba pipeline remains a key element of the energy interests of Slovakia, Hungary, and the whole of Central Europe.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described Magyar’s victory as “a historic moment not only for Hungary but also for European democracy,” expressing hope for joint work for security and prosperity.
“Let us move forward together toward a more sovereign Europe for the security of our continent, our competitiveness, and our democracy,” said French President Emmanuel Macron, commenting on Magyar’s victory in Hungary’s parliamentary elections.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in his address, called for joining efforts to build a “strong, secure, and united Europe.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also congratulated Magyar on his “convincing election victory,” highlighting the strong friendly ties between Rome and Budapest.
“Italy and Hungary are countries bound by deep ties of friendship, and I am confident that we will continue to work together in a constructive spirit in the interests of our peoples and to address common challenges,” she said.
Hungary’s parliamentary elections were held on April 12. According to the National Election Office (NVI), after 98.93% of ballots were counted, the Tisza party received 53.07% of the vote and 138 out of 199 seats in parliament, while Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party secured 38.43% and 55 seats.
