European Commission president to visit Australia to seek trade deal

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is planning to visit Australia in February to conclude security and trade agreements.
According to The Daily Baku, the information was reported by the European publication Politico, citing sources.
A deal with Canberra would give the European Union broader access to the Australian market for strategic minerals such as lithium and copper.
Previous trade talks broke down at the end of 2023 due to disagreements over beef and lamb quotas. It was noted that Brussels has taken steps to revive the negotiations, although the quota issue remains under discussion.
According to the report, a potential agreement with Australia could trigger a wave of criticism due to its significant agricultural component, similar to the free trade agreement with the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) countries.
