Denmark’s prime minister has warned that any military action by the United States against Greenland would effectively spell the collapse of Nato

Denmark’s prime minister has warned that any military action by the United States against Greenland would effectively spell the collapse of Nato
Mette Frederiksen made the remarks after Donald Trump once again suggested that the US might seek control over Greenland, calling the pressure from Washington unacceptable.

Trump, speaking after a recent US military operation in Venezuela, claimed that Greenland was vital to American national security, reigniting concerns about a possible US intervention. Greenland, a largely self-governing territory within the Danish kingdom, remains under Copenhagen’s authority for foreign and defence policy.

“The Daily Baku” reports, Frederiksen stated that an attack on any Nato member by the US would undermine the alliance entirely. She stressed that such an action would destroy the foundations of international security that have existed since the second world war.

Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, strongly rejected Trump’s statements, urging him to abandon what he called “fantasies of annexation”. He said threats and pressure had no place between allies and insisted that Greenland was a democratic society, not a territory that could be seized by force.

The Danish leader accused Washington of exerting unreasonable pressure and said Denmark would do everything possible to protect Greenland. She reiterated that Greenlanders have repeatedly made clear they do not wish to become part of the United States.

The European Union voiced its support for Denmark and Greenland, reaffirming its commitment to national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Meanwhile, political pressure is growing on Frederiksen to outline concrete measures in case of a crisis.

Greenlandic politicians have expressed concern over the changing global order, warning that Trump’s rhetoric represents a dangerous shift in international relations. While some opposition figures downplayed the threat, tensions have increased amid growing competition between the US, China and Russia in the Arctic region.
