US president made repeated claims that the territory should become part of the United States.
“The Daily Baku” reports that Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen issued an unusually firm public response, saying it was absurd to suggest that the US had any right to seize Greenland. She stressed that none of the three parts of the Danish kingdom could be annexed and that Greenland’s people had clearly stated they were not for sale.
Frederiksen urged Washington to stop issuing threats toward a long-standing ally and to respect the sovereignty of another nation and its population.
Her remarks were quickly supported by leaders across the Nordic region, including Finland’s Alexander Stubb, Iceland’s Kristrún Frostadóttir, Norway’s Jonas Gahr Støre and Sweden’s Ulf Kristersson. Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, also condemned Trump’s comments, describing them as unacceptable and deeply disrespectful.
Despite the backlash, Trump reaffirmed his position while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday. He argued that Greenland was essential for US national security and claimed Denmark was incapable of adequately protecting the territory. He mocked Denmark’s recent security measures, suggesting they were minimal, and insisted that both the US and the European Union needed American control of Greenland.
Trump added that the issue would be revisited in the coming weeks, offering vague timelines for further discussion.
In Denmark, observers who track Trump’s statements for potential diplomatic fallout reportedly reacted with weary resignation as the comments resurfaced once again.
