Deadly Cold Wave Brings Travel Chaos Across Europe

A severe winter spell sweeping across Europe has claimed six lives and caused widespread disruption as snow, ice and freezing temperatures paralyse transport networks. In France, five people died in weather-related road accidents, including multiple fatal crashes in the south-west and the Paris region. Authorities also reported numerous injuries as icy roads made driving extremely dangerous.
“The Daily Baku” reports that in Bosnia’s capital Sarajevo, a woman was killed when a snow-laden tree branch collapsed, highlighting the hazards posed by heavy snowfall in urban areas. Aviation was badly affected across the continent. Paris airports cancelled large numbers of flights to allow runways to be cleared and aircraft de-iced, while Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport scrapped hundreds of departures amid similar conditions.
Rail travel was also hit, particularly in the Netherlands, where an IT failure compounded weather-related disruption and led to suspended services. Elsewhere, temperatures plunged well below freezing in Germany and Britain, forcing school closures and causing delays on roads and railways.
Southern Europe was not spared. Italy experienced a mix of snow, heavy rain and flooding, prompting authorities in Rome to restrict access to parks after falling trees and rising river levels raised safety concerns.
