China overturns Canadian man's death sentence after Canadian Prime Minister visits Beijing

China's Supreme Court overturned the death sentence of a Canadian man convicted of drug possession after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made an official visit to Beijing.

According to The Daily Baku, the man's lawyer told Reuters this represents a breakthrough in a case that has strained diplomatic relations between Ottawa and Beijing for years.

Robert Schellenberg was arrested in China in 2014 on suspicion of drug smuggling and convicted in 2018, initially receiving a 15-year prison sentence. He was subsequently sentenced to death in a retrial in January 2019, a month after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver on a US warrant.
