Azerbaijan police arrest alleged couriers linked to Iranian drug trafficker in Baku

Azerbaijani police say they have arrested two people in Baku on suspicion of involvement in the illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs, The Daily Baku reports, citing the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The arrests were made during an operation conducted by officers of the Narimanov District Police Department and the 16th Police Station.
Police identified the suspects as 57-year-old Rauf Askaroglu and 26-year-old Iqbal Ahmadov. During searches, officers seized a total of 5.042 kilograms of drugs, including marijuana, heroin and the psychotropic substance methamphetamine. Authorities also confiscated 708 methadone tablets, pregabalin, other potent pills and electronic scales allegedly used for drug distribution.
Investigators say the suspects claimed they had obtained the drugs for resale from Iranian nationals they had met through social media. The identities of those individuals are currently under investigation.
A criminal case has been opened under relevant articles of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code. The investigation is ongoing.
