Around 4.9 million children died before age five in 2024

Approximately 4.9 million children died before reaching their fifth birthday in 2024, according to new estimates by the United Nations.
According to The Daily Baku, this was stated in a joint report prepared by UNICEF, the World Bank, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations Population Division.
The report noted that most of these deaths could have been prevented through improved access to healthcare services and interventions addressing issues such as complications from premature birth and diseases like malaria.
According to the agencies, the number of preventable child deaths has decreased by more than half since 2000. However, the pace of progress has slowed since 2015.
It should be noted that the figure was also 4.9 million in 2022, which was a record low at the time, and declined to 4.8 million in 2023. Although the 2024 data shows an increase, the organizations stated that estimates are calculated differently across years and are not directly comparable.
