Armenia plans to launch new program in the Araz region

The Armenian government is preparing to implement a new project aimed at regulating sand extraction from the Araz River, which serves as a border between the two countries.
According to “The Daily Baku”, citing Armenian media, the relevant decision was approved during a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday.
Until now, uncontrolled sand extraction had led to changes in the riverbed, creating potential risks for the state border line. For this reason, restrictions had previously been imposed on the scale of extraction activities.
However, due to growing demand for sand in the construction sector, construction companies had called for extraction volumes to be restored to previous levels.
As a result, the government decided to commission the development of a standard project that would allow safe extraction without disrupting the river’s natural flow. A total of 25.2 million drams, or approximately $66,000, will be allocated from the state budget for the implementation of the project.
