ADB eyes $50M for border upgrades project with Azerbaijan's participation

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is considering providing a loan for the regional project "Borders Upgrades for Integration, Logistics, and Development Facility," in which Azerbaijan is a key participant and leader in the development of transit and border infrastructure, The Daily Baku informs referring to the ADB.

The project covers Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, China, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Azerbaijan's experience in digitalizing customs procedures, modernizing border crossings, and developing international transport corridors is being considered as a model for other participating countries.

The total cost of the project is $50 million, and financing is planned to be provided by ADB capital resources.

Project concept approval is scheduled for November 26, 2027, and loan approval is scheduled for 2028.

Azerbaijan has been a member of ADB since 1999. During this period, the bank invested approximately $5.6 billion in the country, including $4.4 billion in the public sector and $1.2 billion in the private sector. The largest financing areas were transport ($1.5 billion) and energy ($1.7 billion).

As part of the new partnership strategy, ADB is prepared to invest up to $2.5 billion in Azerbaijan.

ADB was established in 1966 and is headquartered in Manila. The bank brings together 69 member countries, 50 of which are from the Asia-Pacific region.
