A total of 73 organs and tissues have been transplanted from 13 deceased donors diagnosed with brain death in Azerbaijan

To date (since February 2025), a total of 73 organs and tissues have been transplanted from 13 deceased donors diagnosed with brain death in Azerbaijan, said Yegana Abbasova, Chairperson of the Board of the Coordination Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation under the Ministry of Health, during the “Healthy Morning” program on “Healthy Radio” (93 FM).
Abbasova noted that among these, 23 were kidneys, 13 were livers, 2 were hearts, and 30 were corneas:
“In total, since the brain death protocol was established, 72 individuals have been diagnosed with brain death. Of these, 14 passed away before there was enough time to confirm brain death for the second time. The organs of 27 individuals were deemed unsuitable for transplantation, while relatives of 18 individuals refused consent.”
It should be recalled that on February 24, 2025, Azerbaijan carried out its first organ transplant from a deceased donor. On October 31, 2025, for the first time in the Caucasus region, a heart transplant from a deceased donor was performed in Azerbaijan.
