Azerbaijan and Iran approve operating regimes for sharing Aras River water resources

Azerbaijan and Iran have developed and approved operating regimes governing the distribution of the Aras River's water resources between the two countries.

According to the State Water Resources Agency, the agreement was reached during the 55th meeting of the permanent Azerbaijan-Iran Joint Commission on the use of water and energy resources of the Aras River, held on June 8-11.

The meeting took place in Iran and was co-chaired by Zakir Guliyev, Chairman of the Board of the Regional Water Reclamation Service under the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ADSEA), and Fariba Averideh, Head of the Border Rivers Department of Iran's Ministry of Energy.

Representatives of the Regional Water Reclamation Service, the State Control Service for Water Use and Protection under ADSEA, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and Azerenerji OJSC participated in the discussions.

The sides also discussed monitoring water withdrawals from the river, overseeing water quality, installing new modern water-measuring devices, and other areas of bilateral cooperation.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties signed a final protocol outlining the measures to be implemented.
