Azerbaijan as a middle power and transit hub between East West and North South

- Today, the East and West axes intersect on Azerbaijani territory not as abstract notions but as real and functioning corridors. The Middle Corridor linking China and Europe via the Caspian has become more relevant against the background of northern routes losing importance after the war in Ukraine. Azerbaijan is distinguished from classic transit countries by the fact that it does not act as a passive bridge.
- Official Baku invests in infrastructure, modernizes ports, railways, customs, and logistics systems, and most importantly, aligns its transit policy with a balanced foreign policy. It is precisely at this point that middle power behavior takes shape. Azerbaijan does not join ideological blocs but acts as a predictable partner, demonstrating neither instability nor interference in others' conflicts, which makes it attractive for actors competing with one another.
- Relations with Europe are built around energy security and reliable supply. Connections with Asia are shaped through logistics and long-term access routes.
- The significance of this model becomes clearer when compared with other regions where transit routes turn into instruments of pressure. In many cases, corridors become political leverage or sources of conflict. In the Azerbaijani model, corridors are presented as platforms of shared gain. This approach creates confidence for foreign investors that infrastructure will not be turned into a weapon during times of crisis.
- Azerbaijan's role is further reinforced by its post-conflict position in the South Caucasus. Instead of keeping the region in a state of prolonged confrontation, the country prioritizes normalization, connectivity, and economic logic even when political trust is not fully formed. By presenting transit issues as mechanisms of daily cooperation, Azerbaijan gradually reshapes expectations. This approach is an example of strategic patience
- The main conclusion is that Azerbaijan's current international weight stems from the importance of its practical actions. Azerbaijan will not only connect East and West but will also continue to ensure the bringing together of these connections in an increasingly fragmented world.
